North Carolina man gets 30 years in West Ashley murder

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC)-A former Wachovia loan officer from Charlotte was sentenced to 30 years in connection to a West Ashley murder in 2009.

Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson said that 37-year-old Jerome Renaldo Campbell was found guilty of the murder of 27-year-old Michael German. Campbell was also convicted of three related counts of assault with the intent to kill for shooting at three other people who were with or near German.

Circuit Judge Deadra Jefferson sentenced Campbell to a term of 30 years with the South Carolina Department of Corrections for the murder conviction and sentences of ten years, which will run concurrent, on the assault with the intent to kill charges. Under the sentencing law governing murder, Smalls is not eligible for parole or early release.

Two men charged for hiding information in homicide

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC)-Investigators say two men have been arrested for hiding information involving a homicide in West Ashley.

The Charleston Police Department charged 24-year-old Demeatrius Smalls and 24-year-old Robert Fields with obstruction of justice in the homicide of 27-year-old Kentrell Samuel who was found shot to death on Jan. 5 on a driveway on San Miguel Road.

Detectives say they determined that Smalls and Fields attempted to hinder or impede the murder investigation by concealing information about the incident.

Police are continuing the investigation.

Summerville man charged with third DUI following police pursuit

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC)-Police say a 34-year-old Summerville man was charged with his third DUI in three months after leading police on a car and foot chase in West Ashley early Sunday morning.

The Charleston Police Department charged Charles Coleman Driggers with narcotics violation, possession of cocaine, driving under the influence and a habitual offender charge. Driggers was convicted in November of last year and on Jan. 7 for DUI.

Around 2:12 a.m. on Sunday, authorities say they spotted Driggers on Glenn McConnel Parkway speeding in a red truck.

According to a police report, when officers initiated a traffic stop, the truck did not stop but slowed down and was swerving from lane to lane. Officers say as the truck approached an over pass, Driggers opened the door to the truck and rolled out.

Police say Driggers then jumped back onto his feet, ran, then jumped over a railing and slid down an embankment into the woods.

Thief steals quarters from West Ashley laundromat

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC)-A suspected thief broke into a washing machine at a West Ashley laundromat and stole $30 in quarters.

Charleston police were called out to Pierpont Laundry on Ashley River Road just after 1:30 p.m. Thursday after a complaint was received regarding coins being stolen from a washing machine at the business.

Officers interviewed the complainant who said that while on his lunch break, an unknown subject(s) pried out and stole the coin collector box on one of the washing machines. The box contained approximately $30 in quarters.

The subject also vandalized a second washing machine by prying the coin collector box area. The suspect was unable to pry out the coin box on the second machine. A hammer and screwdriver were left behind one of the washing machines that had been vandalized.

According to the complainant, the suspect caused about $400 in damage to the washing machines.

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - The Charleston Crab House on James Island will host their charity oyster roast tonight for a member of their staff, who was severely injured last Satuday in a car wreck.

32-year-old Andy Petit has been the kitchen supervisor for the restaurant for the past 8 years.  He is in the ICU at MUSC and his lower body is paralyzed.  He's a James Island native and he lives on Johns Island.

Cops: Man arrested after hitting employee during Dollar Tree robbery

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC)-Police arrested a man on Wednesday following a strong armed robbery at the Dollar Tree store in West Ashley.

According to investigators, a 55-year-old Jonathan Burns Jr. went into the Dollar Tree located at 975 Savannah Highway around 4 p.m. and milled around the store for a while before walking back into the manager's office.

An employee said he walked into the office to find Burns taking cash.  The employee also said Burns struck him as he ran out of the store.

Officers took Burns into custody after finding him hiding in a nearby business.  He was charged with strong armed robbery.

Burns was already on probation for property crime enhancement 3rd offense, and also had outstanding warrants with Charleston Police Department for breaking into a motor vehicle and financial transaction card theft.

He was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
