Firefighters made quick work of a fire in a West Ashley apartment complex on Thursday morning.
Charleston Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Julazadeh said city firefighters and crews from the Saint Andrews and North Charleston fire departments responded to the Ashley Oaks Apartments around 8 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire.
Those apartments are located at 78 Ashley Hall Plantation Road.
Units arrived to find light smoke coming from an apartment on the second floor of the eight-unit building. Crews from both departments worked quickly to isolate the fire, ventilate the roof, and evacuate occupants from the building, Julazadeh said.
The fire damage was contained to the attic area above one unit, with water and smoke damage affecting the attic area above four units.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but is believed to be related to the HVAC unit that served the apartment unit. Four of the eight units will remain vacant until repairs can be made by contractors.
The Charleston Fire Department reminds citizens to maintain working smoke alarms in your home. Families should create and practice a home escape plan that includes a designated meeting place. Once you have escaped a burning building, never re-enter for any reason.
